How To Die Exoxy Glue

Tom Colligan, Peoria

>I need to use a gap filling glue on Mahogony. When they speak of dieing epoxy {when mixing it} what is the die they're speaking of?

I have Moser's aniline dies of the right color but I wonder if they aren't speaking about a Japan color or a universal tint?

Tia, Tom.

>well they make dyes just for epoxy. I think even the borg carries a few ones in it's glue department. it needs to be oil based.

>I've used TransFast, TransTint, japan colors and universalcolors - all work. I usually use ebony sawdust to get a black color, or mahogany dust for a dark red/brown.

I use Oxide colouring (ok, coloring), which is a powdered pigment for colouring cement. This is available locally in a variety of colours, which also allows you to mix your own. Just add a few sprinkles to your epoxy and mix well. I am sure that you should be able to obtain the same near you.

Also, you can get earth pigments, dry powdeded, from Lee Valley. Earth Pigments

You should be aware of one thing. Dyes leave the expoxy transparent, albeit darker, and light will still pass through. Pigments are opaque.

Note that the unmixed epoxy hardeners can darken with age, This doesn't affect the strength of the epoxy, but hardener that's been sitting around the shop for two or three years may be dark enough to match your mahogany pretty closely without any additives.

>I've used, when just coloring epoxy (read: not opaque) some of my wife's Wilton food coloring. Works great. Otherwise, I mix in dust from whatever wood I'm using.
