O/T Closing Programs

Todd O. Cronkhite Maine Native in FL. Exile :~(

>I tried to do a Scan Disk this morning, and it won't, or can't complete because, as a message says there is open programs still writing to the disk. How in the heck do I close these programs? I didn't even know I had programs open. In the future how do I tell if there are open programs? I have Windows 98.

>Hey Todd...Try doing your scan from safe mode. I believe it is hold down F8 when your computer is booting up. Google "safe mode in win 98" for the details. During safe mode the display is very weird looking but only the programs you activate run. So the only active program during the scan will be basic Windows 98 and the scan utility. Works great for defraging the hard drive too.JR

>Thanks for the tips Joe, I'll give them a shot. I rarely understand answers to my computer questions, but I think I got this one. Glad you mentioned the defrag as well because I haven't been able to get this thing defragged for a looooooooooooooooooooooooong time.

>If you do a ctrl-alt-delete a window will pop up. Click Task Manager and click on the Applications tab. That will show anything that you have started. You can close anything you see in this tab, if you wish.

If you click on the Processes tab, it will show everything that is running. However, almost all of that is automatic and unless you really know what you're doing, don't mess with what is on the Processes tab.

>Bruce has given you some good info on how to check the running programs.

Once you close the cpu down to reboot in normal mode all of the same programs that were running normally before the scan and defrag in safe mode should still be operating when rebooted to normal system.

Glad it worked...defraging with a bunch of programs up in the background is pretty impossible. DAMHIKT. JR

No joy Bruce

>I did the ctrl-alt-delete thing and no Task Manager. :~( Looked for it in other places but it can't be found by me. Any idea's?

Dang Managers, never one to be found when you need one.

Thanks for all the help, fellas, things are better now, not perfect, but much better. It's those unexpected lock-up that really get under my skin more than anything, know what I mean Vern?

Try This...

>You said you are using windws 98...I am too and just tried cont-alt-del and I got a "close program" window. You can start at the top there and try closing the programs and see if it helps.JR (and you can see whats running at least)

>Right you are Joe. I get the Close Programs Window, and there must be a list of 20-30 things in it. First off, how do I close these, and is there any that I need to leave open?

I've tried 3 times to post this question today, and the 'puter keeps freezing up. Quite arrgravating to say the least.

Thanks to everybodys help and suggustestion thus far, I really appreciate it. I have a Windows 98 book, but it might as well he written in Greek for all the good it does me. Anybody else learning anything from this dialog?

It's Not Working

Todd O. Cronkhite Maine Native in FL. Exile :~(

>I've fought and wrestled with this thing for hours last night trying to close these programs and no joy. Lock-up and freezup abound, and when I get back on the programs that I had taken off the list are back!!

Was looking at a programs called Enditall2 this morning. It is suppose to be a program closer, dare I say program. It really went over my head after the first few pages of instructions. Anybody use this program? Anybody use a program to close programs that they'd recommend?

>Ok I didn't understand that you wanted to close them all the time and not just when you were working with the application you wanted.

Lower left corner on the task bar. Click on start. A menu pulls up. Click on run. Nother window. Type in "msconfig". Nother window. Look up top and click on startup. Nother window...with all the programs that load and run during every startup. They have a check in the box if they start on boot. Deselect the box and make the check go away. (write down which changes you make so you can add it back later if you want)The next time you start up the comp from a boot the programs not checked won't load. I have to monitor this periodically to remove new programs I have added so as to speed up the process of starting the computer. They don't go away just wait until I want to use them and then I load them to the desk top.JR

There's 53 Items!!

Todd O. Cronkhite Maine Native in FL. Exile :~(

>Joe,

I got to the list that you directed me too, and there is 53 boxes checked! Now, even the simplton that I am, I know that I don't want to close them all and get myself into the position where I can't even boot up, sooooooooooooooooooo before I start closing everything is there anything(s) in particular that I want to ensure that I DON'T close?

Thanks for all the help Joe.

>Uh ....Wow. Thats a lot of stuff running in the background. Bet it's a little sluggish. Your system lockups and crashes are probably due to no overhead resources left.

How to fix it...You could try Googling the entrys and see what programs they pertain to. Then if the program isn't needed to boot and run (can't help more here ;-( ) un check it. You could also look for other identifiers like program names in the entry and try deleteing the checks for anything but the Windows and video and sound stuff. Oh yeah if you have anti virus programs leave them on too.

Any more computer savvy islanders out here feel free to chime in.

I'm sorta over my head here.JR

Todd you might try posting a new thread OT asking for help cleaning up your start up configuration to get it up to the top of the page.

>If your computer is freezing/locking up with Win 98, it is working just the way Bill's gang designed it to!!

Get thyself Win XP then you can view the even longer list of running programs in the background.

>Sorry for not responding sooner, I was away from home for a few days. Joe has taken very good care of you.

Joe's advice about MSCONFIG is very good. If I were you, I'd remove the checkmarks next to almost all of the tasks. This is the list of things that will automatically run at startup, and of course, every software maker wants their product up front. This just doesn't need to be. The only ones I have check-marked are the virus detection, java starter, msn messenger and qttask. The others I find to be nuisances.

There's one other place you can look to ease your start-up strain and diminsh the numbers of things running in the background.

Go to start, settings, start menu and remove the checkmarks from things that you don't need starting immediately. You can always start these things, like MS Office, from a shortcut anyway.

Good luck.

Bruce, who also says that Joe's advice about getting WIN XP is very good. It's much more stable.
