>Thanks to all for your support and responces to my first post.

The family chose cremation, and the coffin is now to be two "scatter boxes" for the ashes.

Basically the ashes are going to be divided into two plastic bags which then will each go into their own slide top box.

I'm told the protocol is to slide open the top, slit the bag, and scatter the ashes.

The parents are getting one box, the significant other the other box.

My questions now are;

-Dimensions/neccesary volume? Anyone have any 1st hand experience? I'm going to try and get the bag dimensions from the funeral director (the only difficulty, is I'm in Toledo OH, and my friend's body is in Seattle WA).

-Design? There's an obvious time costraint, so I need to short-cut the design descision making process. Anyone have a favorite well designed box (in the asthetic sense)? Care to share an image? Doesn't need to be your own work neccesarily, I'm looking for any source of inspiration. I've reinserted a link to my friends former businesses site. The work isn't neccesarily purely reflective of his asthetic or body of work, but it gives a good starting point. I'm seeing clean minimalist lines, both for appearence and ease of construction.

A side note that would probably appeal to some here; The family had picked out boxes in Seattle through the funeral director. They apparently were acceptable to them in appearence. Our mutual friend who worked with my friend in his shop was present. Apparently the boxes were veneered MDF. After pointing this out to the family, and explaining the fact that my friend supposedly wouldn't let MDF in his shop, let alone in his work, they put the manufactured boxes back.

Thanks in advance, Coop

>here, but I've been approached a few time and have not taken the hook. I have researched urn boxes a little. If I recall, the inside dimesions are 216 cubic inches. Six" cube or any other dmiesions you wish that comes to 216 cubic inches, inside. For sure, check my information out before making one.

Good luck and sorry about your friend,

Dale

>Cooper,my thoughts are,the design of the box won't matter very much to anyone.I'd keep it simple. However,the species of wood may have some meaning.Did your friend have a love for a particular wood? Or how about a wood species that he grew up surrounded by.Just my thoughts.---Jack

>my brother-in-law passed away late May. I had the honor of making an urn(i.e. box). I used figured mahogany and cocobola. My sister didn't know what she wanted to do with him--scatter in Texas at some point and so I put inside lid. The size depends on how big your friend was. My brother-in-law was less than 130 when he died. The inside measurements were about 8x6x4 and the funeral director said he fit perfectly.

>The outside looks very nice. I'd love to see the inside but there's no pic. If you're using Mozilla you lose the pic in the preview, so after the preview you have to click the "back" button to get to your original message, then hit "Post Message" this time insatead of "Preview Message". Just take a peek in the Graphic upload box (or the image URL box) to make sure something is in there.

>I'm going to try and get some Sitka Spruce, seems like the obvious w/the name of his business.

Sounds like its fairly forgiving to work with. I was worried it'd be brittle like Doug Fir construction grade I'm used to.

I'm going to have to drive to Detroit to get the wood, there's a yard there that specialises in lumber for boats, Public Lumber. Anyone have any dealings w/them?
