How Much $$$

Bartee in Atlanta GA area

>I am completely new to this side.

I have become fascinated with hand planes.

I have a new clifton #4 which I treated myself to.

I am now looking at everything on eBay. I have NO idea how much planes are worth.

I bought a Two-Tone for $39.99. I feel like that was too much.

A Stanley #3 was $30 and a Bailey's # 5 for $6.18. The Baily's turned out to be broken. If you looked close at the picture you could see it , but I did not look close until I won the bid and it seemed really low.

So anyway, where can I find what I should be paying for planes ?

>If you do a search on ebay under completed auctions it will give you a very good ideal of what particular planes sell for on there and as such thier worth. At least what they are worth on ebay.Very important to understand that a seemingly small difference in condition or when it was made can affect the price and being an auction prices can at times not make to much sence.Would be a good ideal also maybe to get a copy of the John Walters pocket Stanley price guide for $15 or so....Todd

Besides eBay....

>You don't have to buy old tools off eBay or from flea markets. I've found a few online dealers who are reputable and reasonable. You might end up spending a few bucks more than on eBay, but you also avoid some headaches that come with trolling eBay, including some sellers who might know less about tools than you. Or blurry photos. Or sniping.

Over the years, I've really been impressed (in particular) with Sanford Moss and Tom Bruce.

Both of these guys know their stuff, sell generally user tools and want you to be happy with your purchase. The same can be said of many sellers on eBay, too, but these two guys are a couple alternatives to eBay that I have been *very* happy with.

>A woodworking friend of mine has been compilling ebay sales reports since last winter on all stanley planes sold, noting condition and closing price.

He sells the report for $10 in electronic form, which is something like 100+ pages with graphs that show pricing trends etc.

Prices are lower right now than they were in the winter, but this $10 woudl show you what quality you can get for what price.

Email me if you want to get in tough, or you can find it on Ebay for sale.

>Bartee,

Welcome to the alluring ,slippery slope of hand tools. When it comes to planes(or tools in general) after awhile it will no longer be "how much should I pay?" it'll be " how many (more)do I have, need, want, etc.?" and no no matter what the others say we are not COLLECTORS,some just get used more often than others.

All kidding aside another guy who is great to do business with is Walt Quadratto at Brass City Toolworks. I haven't personally dealt with the others mentioned in the above posts and am sure you'd be happy doing business with any of the above dealers/people.

Totally agree

>Andy,

Sorry that I missed Walt in my list above. Maybe I should lay off the crack pipe on occasion.

Walt is another excellent source for user tools. Here's a tip: Call him and tell him what you want. He'll dig it up in his store or at the fleas for you.

Good prices, too.

>I've bought stuff from both Sanford and Walt. Good service from both guys. Walt sent my plane, wwII #7, with the blade sharpened. It was nice to see what a well sharpened blade should look and feel like.

>Hey, welcome to the dark side (also the side where you can hear the radio playing while running your tools).

First: Get thee to the Porch (as explained in another response). Not only will the folks there point you in the right direction, many of them post monthly For Sale lists, and they're all honorable chaps to do business with.

As for other on-line retailers, check out my Knowledge Base. I have links to a bunch of used tool dealers under each of the headings.

Good luck, and keep asking questions.

>I've made quite a few purchases on the 'bay, but if you're just starting out I'd suggest going through a reputable dealer. You have enough to learn without having to watch out for other people's lack of knowledge. The TWO-TONE, for instance, isn't a great user as they were promotional items and weren't finished to the degree the regular bench planes were. I've purchased from Tom, Sandy and Walt, and would not hesitate to deal with any of them again. My all-time favorites were purchased (at over ebay prices) from an elderly dealer who had been in business for over 40 years. If you're going to go ebay, do some homework. Not only are price trends shown by completed auctions, some dealers have sold a lot of planes, have excellent feedback and know how to write an accurate description. I have several bookmarked. (Hint - they don't use WOW or L@@K! in their titles.)
