Singer sewing machine restoration

Bruce, a MN Galoot

>A friend just asked me to put a top layer of veneer on a ca. 1900 Singer sewing machine. The original is about half gone. In fact there is a second layer of veneer underneath, above a solid substrate, and I think much of that must be replaced, too.

I need help in identifying the wood. It almost seems like walnut, but has a grain structure closer to rosewood. I suppose it could be a true mahogany, but the grain doesn't match some Honduras Mahogany I have laying around.

Does anyone have an idea what was normally used in these old machine cases?

Thanks

Bruce
