Not every day you see one of these: Stanley 85 *LINK*

Angus Barclay, in New Zealand

>A New Zealand auction site currently features a Stanley 85 for sale. Last time I looked, bids were up to NZ$1600, which is about US$1000.

The site doesn't accept bids from outside New Zealand or Australia, so Derek Cohen, Mark Harrison, Andrew F, Kevin F and their buddies can bid but the rest of you will just have to keep yourselves entertained by watching the bidding war.

The seller has a few other interesting planes on the auction block too and the histories of both current bidders suggest they're serious. (I've never paid more than NZ$45 for a plane at acution and I'm not going to bid on this! And I'm not the seller either!)

regards

Angus Barclay

>When I bought mine the old woman at the Antique store asked me why at $25 it was priced at more then the other planes I was buying. I told her I don't know you would think since the handles were loose it would be less.....Todd

>Not necessarly he said the old lady at the anteek store. Now them places have booth rental and by the question the lady was not the seller. just the person working the counter that day. and to top it off people who sell in them stores are known for buying stuff from people in the same store who price stuff to low and putting there own tag on it and reselling it. SO I would say there were several people who had no idea how to sell tools.

>This place even though I often call it my every other week antique store isn't really a regular antique store but I guess rather more of a maybe a resell or consignment shop since most of what they sell is estates and items of old people that are either dead or get put into nursing homes etc. They really take a big chunk of the money I imagine the owner of the 85 got less then $15 for it. Used to be lots better to buy tools at and over the years I have made some very good buys, once bought a huge beautiful Pattern makers tool chest full of his tools for around $200, and a mint in the box rare Stanley 54 for $40, but of late getting harder.Did get a Stanley 3 and 4 Mint in thier boxes for $10 ea. the other week. These people price things using a dart bord it seems and often no ryme or reason to it.Next to the in the box stanleys was an old beat transistional priced at $25 , go figure.......Todd

>So the LN 85 'repro' I bought actually _saved_ me money, right?

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it. ;-)

>No argument here Glenn. As a matter of fact, that purchase saved you *so* much money that you should have plenty left over to buy a few more tools.
