Stupid Vacation ?

Ernie Miller

>Zues wants to take one last vacation why he still has the energy. so we have rented a condo and pontoon boat on the lake of the ozarks. So if I was to get the wild idea that I wanted to go fishing what would I want to fish for and what bait would I want? I haven't done any fishing in 6-8-10 years and back then the most inportant thing to remember was the bank bait. (Long neck bottles of a malt beverage) fish untill you run out of bank bait and go home happy. In the past I allways fished with worms Minnows or may flies. I don't like all that strenuas exersise of casting and reeling it causes the malt beverage to get agitated. So what do I want to fish for and what bait do I need? I know I can get it cheaper here in town than there at the lake so I want to be prepared. Also Does monofilament line go bad sitting in the garage? And one more thing to make this easier. I don't clean fish and the wife don't cook fish so I will be gently replacing them back in the lake after pulling them out.

>Ernie,

I don't know about fishing Lake of the Ozarks, but I do a fair amount of fishing in Colorado. I do know that most monofilament line does weaken after a few years. Some of the newer fluorocarbon stuff lasts a lot longer, but the regular stuff is pretty well shot after 5-6 years. If you don't want to keep the fish, and you are baitfishing, don't use treble hooks. Fish will often swallow the bait and hook and they will almost surely die with a treble hook in them.

Have a great time and enjoy the bank baits.

>Ernie,

Like Ted, I don't have any experience with your waters but ....

When I retired and moved to Bishop one of the major attractions was living a few hundred yards from the Owens River (one of the best trout fisheries in the world). With access to the river 365 days per year one of my dumb lists was to fish every day of the year (not each year, but every date over a period of years) - I've been here three years this month and only have three days left (December 5, 6, 7 - could have fished but it snowed pretty hard and I was a wimp).

Anyway, yes mono does deteriorate with age: fishing stress and exposure to light contribute as well. Our rule up here is to replace mono every year (most guides require this before they'll put a fisherman on the water). At pennies per yard it's cheap insurance against loosing a fish to a broken line (we call this unfortunate occurance a "long release").

Good luck and enjoy the vacation.

>Of course you could always just hang out a fishing pole without line. That way none of the fish would be tempted to even nibble and you wouldn't disturb your malt beverage ;).

>You can never really go wrong with worms or minnows. Most species will go after both. It's cooler up there than where I fish and if the catfish are spawning still, crappie and bass will be after fingerlings but probably the fish will be deeper during the day to stay cool. The species there are black bass, smallmouth bass, striped bass, sand bass (white bass), crappie (black and white), catfish, bluegill and goggle eye (perch or sunfish) and paddlefish, which are out of season now.

I'll Never Forget Lake Of The Ozarks

George@Colonel's Workshop-Havertown PA

>Good Evening Ernie,

Well, I've been there more than a few times, and it gets prettier every time I go thru Missouri: I love the place. I took my very pregnant wife and first two children there for an outing back in 1971. We rented one of those bicycle peddle chain driven paddle boats and the 4 1/2 of us got out to the middle of the Lake and the wind came up. It blew against me no matter what direction I headed in. My wife's stomach acted like a big sail. It must have taken me 3 hours of peddeling to get back to where we started. Man, was I ever in need of a cold beer! The kids needed changing and my wife was real mad at me. It was a long trip home. Go for bass, crappie, and catfish. Remember how to keep the worms warm.

>Flourocarbon line as a leader is the steelheaders secret, but you do not want fluorocarbon spooled onto your reel; it is not very flexible, and will casue a large number of tangles. I use P-line brand for most of my fishing now with a fluorocarbon leader. P-line is very abrasion resistant on the rocks and has a very consistent breaking point. I replace my line every year.

>Ernie, you'll have better luck and a better vacation if you aren't interuputed by having to take fish off the line, rebait, clean fish, cook fish...tsk tsk....

More relaxing if you throw the hook in the water without any bait on it, few interuptions that way.

>Thanks for the report. Heck I figured I would have to cut some livers up this weekend and let them set in a coffee can where they get morning sun for a week or so to get it ripe for fishing. I can go right to the chadd? I'm going to try them power baits for bass or go for the crappie. Although this could be getting complicated and I may go for crusing and watching the wife sun bath. Just change the angle of the cruse so she get bronsed on both sides flip her and cruse some more. This fishing idea is starting to sound like work? I will have to think about it some more. I'm getting that feeling like when you are at an auction and they hold up a #5 with a broken tote and no one is bidding at $2? do I want to? we will see.

>Fishing is really hard work; that's what makes it fun ;) Fishing occupies way to much of my time. But if you get into it, especially fly fishing, it becomes a very interesting passion. I just found a number of old maps and books at a garage sale; this man had a real passion for fishing while he was alive. A very interesting legacy, and it has been a different experience to go through the books and see what he highlighted, the maps with highlighted areas in some of my favorite rivers; I think a worthwhile pursuit when all is said and done; the experiences will last well into my old age.
