Clamping pressure Distorting maple

Dan Clermont

>Hello Everyone,

Seems lately I have been having allot of problems with distorted maple. I don't notice it until I apply the finish and then I get all of these waves. I try sanding them out but they remain.

I hate burning this stuff in the fireplace after all of that work.

Here is a pic of the box lid before I scrapped the project.

>I understand how hard it must be for you to burn all that wood, but it does look prety bad. It appears that it has some kind of flaws in it. Tell you what, just because I am a nice guy, if you send it all to me, I will take care of the disposal for you.

On the serious side

Dan Clermont

>It is the lid for my wife's keepsake box. I made it for her with my 4 year old daughter who "pressured" me into making it on Mothers day.

I would have liked to spend more time making it but I had to have an oiled box by dinner time.

The wood is from a tree a group of us milled in a Bull's pasture. WE called this tree "Thor's Maple" and it has some very interesting figure and spalting.

Yep, that's a shame

>...Dan, you'll have to tell your wife that you need a complete new set of clamps so you don't keep ruining wood like this. : )

Looks great, how 'bout a picture of the rest of it?

>Hi Luke,

I will try and get some pics later on today. I don't own a digital camera and was playing around with my scanner.

In my mind the project was a failure cause I like to spend allot of time tweaking but with an excited 4 year old helping out we had to have a box made within the next couple of hours.

Are you talking about the corners...

Scott Burr in Ben Lomond CA

>where the miters come together? Also how did you and what did you clamp it with?

That's a shame, sure is pretty wood.

Re: Are you talking about the corners...

Dan Clermont

>Hi Scott,

i was in a hurry and the groove for the top was not quite wide enough so when I put it together the top was too large by a teeny, weeny bit. The pic is huge and the box is only 6" long so you don't really notice it.

Looking at the box on Woodcentral right now would be like looking at it through a magnifying glass.

I have done much better and it was a poor example of my work however, I was trying to have some fun with the "creases" in the wood.

So that is what happened ;-)

Dan Donaldson

>You got the miters and the frame too tight and it put those funny creases in the center panel;-)

to my mind it's a howling success !!

Ian in Sydney

>Stop being so serious about it

In 50 years time the [now] 4 year old will look at the box and proudly proclaim "Dad and I made that as a Mother's day present for mum when I was 4!"

says the dad who has just helped his 6 year old make a bird house.
