Re: Double & Sliding Square
William Duffield, on the Cohansey
>Well, I guess I've been spoiled by the Starrett combination squares I've gotten used to. This year, I decided I needed a 4" double square, and since the Lee Valley was about half the price of an equivalent Starrett, I ordered one. I sent it right back, and ordered a Starrett from Tools For Working Wood instead. I find this form factor to be very useful for lots of things around the shop, including measuring wood and setting up tools and jigs. There were two reasons I didn't like the Lee Valley offering. The rule was about a hundredth short of 4" long, and all four sets of graduations did not start from the same zero point. I figure this could have been a sample defect and another one might have been fine, but it had another minor, annoying problem that I found I could not live with. I am often turning the ruler over and turning it around in the head, depending on what I am measuring. This square was very finicky to get the rule remounted in the head, taking a lot more time than is typical of a Starrett. Again, this may have been a sample defect. I cannot be sure, since I only saw one square.
Tools for Working Wood will be able to supply you with a Starrett double square with the same size head, but with with a 100 mm. metric rule, which is approximately 4" long. Also, Starrett makes a center finding head that fits the rules in this size range. This head is very useful if you are turning spindles. Starrett also makes a larger double square head, with a level, that holds either 6" or 150 mm. rules. Note also that Starrett does not offer the option of the hardened head in the 4" size double square, that they do offer in larger size double and combination squares.
I will say that I got great service from Lee Valley. They accepted the square I returned without question, and even paid return postage. That's more than one would expect, since I didn't ask for a replacement that worked better. OTOH, I got the Starrett overnight, or at worst next business day.
