Dad report

Moses Yoder in White Pigeon, MI

>Some of you might recall a picture I posted at the start of the year of my dad; there were a number of comments about me being fortunate to still have my dad to hang out with and I really do feel blessed. About 4 or 5 weeks ago, I received a call that he had lost consciousness for a short period of time, dialed 911 and was taken to the hospital. They found an ear infection and thought that was probably the main culprit, but made an appointment for further testing as they could not find anything seriously wrong. He ended up having a heart monitor assigned to him, and over the 4th of July weekend he talked about how it was really just a way to keep the doctors entertained and they would find nothing wrong. We had the whole family get together, and had a good time. Last Friday morning, his doctor called and told him to report to the hospital immediately for a heart catheterization. They found an 80% blockage on the main artery going into the heart, and scheduled surgery for last Monday. They did a triple bypass on Monday afternoon, about 4-1/2 hours in surgery, and I saw him again today. He is healing rapidly, was in good spirits, and is looking forward to going fishing this fall. So thanks to alert doctors, fortunate timing, and modern technology it appears as though I could easily have him around another 20 years. Two of his brothers died in the last two years of massive heart attacks; he is 71, and now I really feel blessed.

Super Great News, Moses!

Bob Hutchins in central TX

>It really is good to hear when things are taken care of beforehand!

FWIW, I worked for about 6 months on the cardiac floor in a major hospital. I saw many patients come in that were in horrible shape. A day or two after surgery the nurses were walking them around. A month or two later they (the ones who came back just to visit with the help) all looked better than I do -- which admittedly is not all that hard.

I'm sure your Dad will be in even better spirits and physical condition very quickly. We'll keep you both in our prayers.

>Good for you Moses!

My dad has had bowel cancer, a triple bypass and prostate surgury all in the last five years. We've been back to visit most years since but this year after a 5 year gap he and my mother are coming over (to the U.S from the U.K ) for a vacation. He is 80 this year and he says this is his last visit - I intend making the most of it - time off work - time in the shop just tinkering with him. I suspect that he or my Mum won't be around in twelve months time so for once in my life I won't be wasting the time but truly spending it with them.

>I know how it feels to have a parent in the hospital. My mother just got out of intensive care for heart problems and pneumonia.

It`s scary as hell to think you may lose someone you love so much.

>Glad to hear things are doing well. Fishing with dad wouldn't that be fun. A word of warning. every one who I know who had one of them came out fealing better and able to do more. He might give you a run for you money on the stream fishing. Don't come crying to us if you dad cought all the trout and you only got minnows.

>Great news Moses. I feel really blessed to still have my 80 year old Dad around too. At the end of May when I went out to western NY to visit, he and I did a day trip together to the Genessee Valley Village and Museum. A full day of the 2 of us looking at 1797-1845 houses, furniture, poking around in the woodworking and other re-enactor shops. Enjoy the added time you have with your Dad.

>Good Afternoon Moses,

You are indeed lucky and so is your Dad. I had a quintupple by-pass six years ago. I still remember the pain beforehand. Modern medicine routinely lengthens lives. Hope your Dad enjoys the next 20 years: no reason why he won't.
