Lion Trimmer?

Tony - Memphis

>Anybody use one of these? I was making a small music box and mitering the small trim was difficult. I thought maybe one of those trimmers would be nice to have. Thinking of adding it to my Santa list. My wife and I were given a tour of the back room at the frame shop we use after I asked how they cut their miters. They had a guillotine type machine that was foot operated I think. Similar concept anyway and they cut some nice miters. Anyway, thought it'd be nice for that final shaving removal.

>I have a Lion trimmer. Don't use it that much, but when I do, I always appreciate having it! Key is very sharp blades and very light cuts--just the ticket to "sneak up" on a tight mitre.

Long and the short of it is, its another tool to get a job done. A plane and shooting board, or a mitre vise, and who knows what else can also do the job.

>A simple shooting board will work well. You might want to use either a ramped shooting board, a skew bladed plane, or a "false table" to limit spelching.

Shooting boards can be made very accurate by shimming, with cigarette papers if need be.

Thanks!

>Shims! yeah, I keep all sorts of things in my shim drawer....business cards, credit cards, those cards they send in the mail, etc. Post it notes are good too. Haven't tried the cigarette papers though - that's pretty thin!

That's what you might call the "upper bound" of accuracy.

The point is, a shooting board can be as accurate as you need.

Cigarette papers - another nostalgic moment

Bill Houghton, Sebastopol, CA

>In my ill-spent youth, back when motorcycles had ignition points, we used to use cigarette papers for setting ignition timing - what you do is put a little strip of the paper clamped in the points, then slowly turn the motor over in its normal direction until the cam just starts to open the points, at which time the cigarette paper slips out. Best possible material (short of very thin brass shim stock): thin, strong enough, and readily available, since in any given household, someone rolled his own (or her own), using either tobacco or another less commonly available leafy substance.
