>Here's a link to some pics of two closed tote IPE smoothers I am building. They will have adjustable mouths and a pivoting block to provide pressure on the wedge. HNT Gordon uses this idea in his kit planes, although he uses brass, IPE is so dense that I used this idea in my planes. Instead of threading directly into the wood I used Helicoils for both the adjustable mouth and the pivot block. I made a prototype in MDF and my ideas seem to be functional. I'm also working on a razee jack and jointer.

>Interesting designs. Those are LONG horns on the totes - how do the totes feel?

We'll be looking forward to performance reports.

>Those look pretty cool but I'm with Bill, those horns look really long. It's tough to see how they'll be comfortable. How do you find the ipe to work with? I've got a piece but I'm a bit afraid of what it will do to my chisels and planes. One things for sure, you'll never have to worry about the mouth opening up due to sole wear.

>Any details you have (plane, angles, wedge pivots) would be gratefully received; I'd like to build a scrub along similar lines (altnough the bedding angle would be lower, and the mouth non-adjustable).

>The horns look long but actually seem to be quite comfortable, I can always cut them down. The angles on these are 45 and 50. As far as the pivot blocks go I am hoping my MDF prototype will provide some feedback. They did work though at holding the iron in place and as long as they are snug when I adjust the iron/wedge, they should be plenty strong. THis Ipe was very dense but using rasps and files seems to work okay, hand sanding was another story. Once I get it all together and working I post some more pics. I used System Three epoxy and these are like tanks now, heavier than I thought but not bad.
