So I found a plane. Now what?

Steve Kubien

>Afternoon everyone,

I was killing a li6ttle time this weekend and happened upon a garage sale. From it I procured a Stanley #131, reverible block plane which seems to be in pretty good shape except for the missing front knob. A couple of questions....

Anyone got a knob they ain't using (remember, this is a family show)?

How useful is this thing? I had never seen one before. Isx it likely to be my block plane of choice?

Thanks,

Steve Kubien

>The 131 is a pretty rare block plane, and if it is in any kind of good shape you can pobably get over $100 for it if you need rent money. The #130 is much better for a user block plane that does pretty much the same thing but without the adjuster on it. Neither one of these planes is really much good for fine finish work, as they usually have a fairly large mouth that is not adjustable. But it would be a good plane to clean a bit, sharpen really good, and use for breaking edges or trimming parts ot fit. But if I still had my 131, it would go into a cabinet instead of being put to work. I like the #9-3/4 block plane. I traded my 131 for a circular plane.

>Are prone to breaking so I would not use it. like Moses said they are a collectable plane I got about 135 out of mine last summer. I bought it at the mile high flea market so thoes of you in Denver there are some good deals out there.

Well that settles it then...

>I'll take the advice from both of you and see what I can get for it (probably a trade in my case). Thanks for the info.

Well, nice find...

>As said it's somewhat of a rare plane. The early ones are worth quite a bit (look at the blade adjuster knob fancy=older, plane=newer).

A knob off a POS 220 or similar plane (203, 140 etc.) see Patricks B&G will work on a 131. Nice score, and yes...YOU SUCK!
