Skew blade templates for the LV Honing Guide II *LINK*

>Hi all

This is an expansion on the previous post a few days ago, when I offered a set up for the Stanley #140 block plane. Shortly after this, I was asked for a similar set up for a #79 side rabbet plane.

It occurred to me that building templates is quite straight forward, and I’d like to offer a guideline here. The LN #140 will have slightly different template dimensions to the Stanley version, plus the LN comes in both Left and Right versions.

I have built a #140 template (below) as an example of the process. The steps involved are:

1) measure the mouth angle of the skew (see picture below).

2) The other relevant measurement is the distance between the start and stop on the blade registration jig. The setting for a 25 degree bevel is #2 (yellow) on the Honing Guide and Green 17 degrees (or Red 35 degrees) on the Registration Jig.

3) Transfer the dimensions to a durable material (I have used a cutting board), and cut this out.

4) Place the template on the Registration Jig and set up blade.

5) Reverse it for the other hand (my Stanley is used here for illustration).

It is important to do your own measurements as sometimes these will differ between planes. For example, although I have above used 70 degrees for the Stanley #140, mine is in fact 69 degrees (which is why I had to regrind the brand new LN blade I got for it. Damn!).

Hope this helps.

The measurements for the #79 will be posted separately.

Regards from Perth

Derek

Skew blade templates for the #79

>Part 2

Making a template for the #79 is exactly the same. I have not made one yet (i.e. is untested), but took a few pictures and measurements.

1) Settings for a 25 degree bevel are: Green (#3) on the Honing Guide, and Red 45 degrees on the Registration Jig.

2) The template is calculated as above.

3) See pictures below for angles involved.

The rest is up to you.

>I think you are missing something, Derek. Don't you have to measure the skew angle normal to the blade's bedding angle, instead of normal to the sole of the plane?

It's difficult to tell from your photo, but it appears that the blade of your square is parallel to the base of the plane. If the difference is not apparent in a low angle plane, try the same test with a #46, or any other skewed, bevel down plane in your arsenal.

Note that since the L-N #140 has a signifantly lower bedding angle than the Stanley, you will introduce less error when measuring the L-N than the Stanley by the method I am assuming you are using.

>Hi William

I took the bevel measurements from skew blades that have known bevel angles. This was done manually first, then measurements checked with my Starrett protractor. They were not calculated on the blade projection (on the Registration Jig) for blades with straight edges. While I have only needed to use the template for the #140 so far, it indicates to me that the process I have used (and the calculations) are correct.

>Hi William

I meant to ask you how you would go about drawing up a template, if you viewed the process differently. (Perhaps I am missing something).

As I understand it, there are two factors to contend with:

1) The blade projection on the Registration Jig.

2) A template to set the blade so that, although set at an angle, it hones square to the Guide.

What I have done (above) works successfully. But I have not tried it out on a #46 which, as you say, is a different kettle of fish. I'm not sure why (yet), so I will have a look at my #46 blades tomorrow (it is late Sunday night here) and report back later.

>OK. It's been a long time since I've done a lot of trig, especially in three dimensions. I'm rustier than most of my tools, for sure. I'll see what I discover when I get back to the "lab", but I may not report back, especially if I decide I agree with your results. I was going to go take some photos of the #98 and #99 blades in the new guide, but before I could go through the whole procedure, I found MIke Wenzloff had already posted a link to his photos of positive results, and anything I would have done would have been redundant.

>As excellent and most helpful series of posts, which I hope you will consider developing into a free standing article that can be archived.

I have done something similar with angle blocks, but had the fortune of having my planes (the L-N versions) having been equally and accurately machined. Haven't tried this with the 98/99 irons as I use them so rarely.

I have no idea what the L V eventual solution will be, though we all know I wish it were already available. I suspect that regardless of the evenutal L V solution, your method will offer an inexpensive and versatile alternative.
