Magnets and Chisels?????

Greg Deavers

>Hey All,

I want to build a chisel holder and would like to use magnets embedded in the wooden slot to "retain" my marples, and "construction" chisels. The magnets would have a thin layer of wood between them and the tool. Where, hopefully this will keep them from 'rattling' in their prospective slots, slipping out unexpectedly in transport, etc.

I understand that the chisels may possibly become slightly magnetic when sliding across the magnets.

My question is, WHAT DOES THE MAGNETIC EFFECT HAVE ON THE TOOL?

Sharpening??

Does it matter really if I use the magnets? If so, I can switch to weather stripping, a Leather or rubber gromet wedge, etc.....

Just wondering! Thanks in advance!

>The main problem that you might run into is when you sharpen it. If it is magnetic, the filings will tend to stick to the chisel which might make it a bit more difficult to clean it off when doing the sharpening.

>Greg, I have several Millers Falls butt chisels I keep in my household toolbox. They've somehow gotten magnetized over the years. The magnetism is a pain. The chisels pick up all kinds of metal particles that interfere with the cutting action and dull the blades. Steel wool particles are the worst. Sharpening them is difficult. The metal bits adhere to the edge and trap stone particles. All of this interferes with the sharpening action and prevents you from getting a really fine edge. I don't know how my blades got magnetized, but I have avoided magnetic tool holders and such for this very reason.

How your chisels got magnitized (I'm sure!) ....

>When we recently toured the Newport-News naval yard we were told that when the ships lay around at port too long in the same orientation to the earth's magnetic field that they became magnetized (and therefore more detectable by mines etc). Before leaving port they demagnetized them in a giant coil.

So the source of your problem is clearly that your household tool box has sat in port too long. It needs to go to war on those LOML jobs more often.

Pass them slowly through the inside of the crook of a Weller soldering iron and the oscillating field in this one "wire" coil will scramble their little dipoles and the problem will be gone.

>Tindall and my wife have ganged up on me! No more shop time until the honey-dos are done and the chisels are demagnetized. Oh! Woe is me.
