chisel caddy
Clay C in Miami
>I just Friday finished a design class at CofR, and for the last 4-5 days, our assignment was to make something that 'honors or elevates' an ordinary object or action.
So, I made a caddy, to hold a half-dozen or so of the chisels, rasps, whatever I'm using at any one time on a project. The idea is that this way, these don't get lost under piles of shavings, scraps, offcuts, etc., on the bench, don't bang edges, and are held at a comfortable angle. The handle could stand to be a little taller to clear, but I mounted it toward the back, so the weight of the contents makes it hang at an angle, such that the tool hanldles clear the caddy handle. The Japanese-theme was just a whim - one of the first week's 2.5-hour 'blitz' projects included half the class making 'wabi-sabi' (roughly, Japanese-rustic) war toys. I was in the other half, which made 'modernistic' war toys, and this was my opportunity to play around in the Japanese aesthetic I'd missed out on in the first week.
I'll post two pics - this one shows it 'upright, in carrying position, the next shows it in 'bench access' position. I didn't have time to put a finish on it, and the brass-pin hinges are still protruding, because I'm not sure that I won't want to rework the handle entirely, and this way I can remove them easily.
Since I may still do some refining now that the class and the time pressure is over, any thoughts or suggestions are welcome ...
