Router plane fence usefulness

Bill Houghton, Sebastopol, CA

>Picked up one bit of rust today, a No. 71 router plane, fairly recent model (No. 11 or newer, but Made in USA), just $5. This is my third, and the first that takes a fence (others are much earlier). Alas, when I looked at it after getting it home, I discovered that it's cracked through the base just beside the cutter post.

So: how useful is the fence? Is it worth repairing it, and acquiring a fence (Stanley still lists them - don't know if they actually have them).

Oh, and

>I don't know how useful the fence is - but I just ordered one from St James Bay tool Company so I can find out. Their catalogue lists them at $10.00 including the screw. As to repairing the crack, you could just add a wooden piece to the bottom shaped to fit the router (or not - as it pleases you.) Just use the two screw holes to attach the wooden bottom to the base.

>I've never used the fence on my either. I was going to recommend what Skip said, but he beat me to it. I'm wondering if there's something better to use than wood here... plastic, UHMW or phenolic(sp?) maybe...
