Small Trimming Plane

>Lie Nielsen just came out with a Model Maker's Block Plane at a cost of $65.00 US. The plane is small low angle with a blade of 7/8" wide, .125 thick, 4 3/8" long and 1 1/4" wide it weight 8.oz. I will like to know who has one and if possible, please share with us on its performance.

On the other hand, Lee Valleys also offers a similar model which is made by 3rd party call Small Palm Plane. I have one of this and did not like its overall performance. The blade is place bevel down at an angle of 45° and before I could put it to work, it needed some work at the sole since it was not totally flat and the blade required a good sharpening to achieve some results on soft wood like balsa; better results was obtained with the Stanley 12-101 trimming plane. On the other hand, the Palm Plane performed very well trimming hard woods.

I will like to ask Rob if he has a small palm or model maker’s plane in the pipe line and hope same could out perform those listed.

>I have a stanley 101. It's a great little plane on hardwoods IMHO. Here a neat trick: Sharpen the blade at 30 deg. With the blade placed in the plane in it's normal position you have a 45 deg. cutting angle. Because of this planes somewhat wide mouth you can turn the blade over (bevel down, if I'm remembering correctly) and now you have a york piched 101.I perfer the 100 squirl tail over the 101. Yes you can do the same thing to a 100 also.
