Splotchy finish on curly cherry
Ted Shuck, Centennial, CO
>I am building a couple of frame and panel blanket chests for LOML and have finally gotten to the stage where I am starting to finish some of the parts. I finished the panels with BLO, followed by shellac and I am very happy with the finish. However, when I applied the BLO to the larger top of the chest, I get a splotchy finish where most of the finish looks good, but it has some 1/2" to 1" spots of darker color.
On closer examination of these spots, I found that there was some slight tearout of the wood surface in these areas and they absorbed the BLO more. I have scraped and planed the top panel smooth again, but I still get these small zones where the pore structure looks more open. I think this is just a characteristic of the curly grain of the wood and I am concerned that if I reapply the BLO, I will get the same splotchy finish again.
I have thought about putting on a seal coat of shellac, before the BLO, but worry that this may look different from the rest of the finish on the chest.
If anybody has suggestions on how to avoid this splotchy finish, I would appreciate it.
Thanks,
Ted
