Clock door joinery
Jack Guzman from Maine
>I'm building a wall clock to fit an antique movement. I have two 14" square pieces of painted glass to fit in the door.I built the case. The door is now on the drawing board. The frame will be rabbeted in the front to take the glass and the beads that hold it in will double as a molding profile.I'm thinking that I'll join the four corners with mitered half laps. All the wall clocks of this type I've seen have mitered corners and I like the added strength of the laps.I need help with the center rail.I'm not sure how I should join it to the stiles. The door material is 3/4" thick with a 3/8"x3/8" rabbet and 3/4" of face left on all pieces. Should I just lap the rail into the rabbet,or mortise and tenon it to the sides? Any other alternatives anyone can think of?---Jack
