Brillant Hand Plane

George@Colonel's Workshop-Havertown PA

>Good Morning Friends,

Can anybody tell me anything about this plane, which came from my friend Kurt's estate? It is slightly more than 8 inches long by 2 inches wide. The iron has a stamping which looks like "Kunz". Behind the frog on the upper bed casting is the number "600". The tote displays a very worn decal which says "Marke" on the top, and "Zeit 1910" on the bottom. The center portion of the decal is too worn for any discernable image. The upper portion of the iron is cut out on both sides to accept little brass wheels which bear on the iron. These brass wheels sit on twin threaded shafts which are screwed into the frog. The purpose of the wheels is to position the iron through the mouth of the plane. The word "Brillant" is cast into the cap iron. I suspect its of German origin. I haven't used it yet. Its is real good shape.

>It's definitly German and they have been around 30 years or more. On a second note George, did you read(recieve)my post regarding the frog that I have that may fit your Bedrock #5 which this one came off of?

>Good Evening Rocky,

No I didn't read your post about the frog. I am interested, though. I have determined my plane is a model 5. I have been working with Clay on the premise we could jointly buy a plane on ebay and canibalize it for parts, sharing the cost. Nothing available at present in our price range. Will the Bedrock Frog you have fit a 605 Bedrock type 5? If so, what price are you asking for it?

>George,

this plane is of German origin and made by Gustav Kunz. The company was founded in 1910 and is still around. The plane you have seems like one on their homepage (link) and it is used for plastic and plastic covered wood.

>Thank You Wolfgang,

The link shows my plane. Mine is not as "vibrant" because it has black Japanning and wooden knob and tote. My deceased friend, Kurt, must have brought that with him when he came to America after the War. He was a model/pattern maker and worked with man made materials. Having a plane like the Brillant #600 is completely consistent with his employment.
