>I just put on the last poly coat on the top of my new work bench. The top of the table is 10/4 maple. The bench dogs are made of birch. The vice dogs are blood wood. The side of the bench dog holder is walnut that I cut down and air dried. The tool crib below is made of maple ply and edged with ebonized maple. The tambour curtain hides my routers and the cherry drawers are full of chisels etc.

I teach wood working and I did this project to keep my sanity.

>Nice bench. I see that you do not like moving bench dogs from hole to hole :-).

>I was talking to Cris Gochnour, who you may recall is often featured in Fine Woodworking. He mentioned that when he made his bench that he made a dog for each hole. I thought that was a great idea and have found that it is very convienent. Thanks for the kudos on the bench.

>Looks good - I'm impressed!

How about some larger, more detailed pics? Maybe closeups of the tail vise, the dog holder, shelving .. you know, the 'features'?

Got a guess how many hours you have in it?

>Nice job, McKay. Now why would you have go fight to preserve you sanity when filling young and eager minds with the mysteries of woodworking? ;>)

How did you ebonize the maple? Are you concerned that the 10/4 top may move around a bit? Just curious why you chose not to ripp & regluing it. Again, very nice & thanks for sharing!

>That's a fine looking bench. I'll join the other posters in asking for more pics. Especially of the base and storage ideas.

>The bench doubles as a off table for the table saw. It is 36" wide and 115" long. I have a denray sanding table on the left side. I may have to do a number of posts to get some of the pictures that I have taken. By the way, I don't get me wrong, I love my students, but they have a way.....

>I made a jig to cut the dogs. Once it was made, the 24 dogs only took about a min each. I used bullet catches to keep the dogs at the correct elevation. The top was made by ripping the maple and then rotating it 90 deg. so as to have quarter sawn to quarter sawn.

>You obviously put a lot of thought into your bench. I particularly admire the base design with the well planned the storage. I need to make some wooden bench dogs and you've given me some ideas. Thanks. Beautiful bench.
