plane gloat, and yet again, looking for advice.

>I found an old mathieson smoother for (what I considered) a fairly reasonable price. It was a bit more than a Lie-Nielson, but it's been repaired, and instead of the original blade, it's been fitted with a Hock blade, so the price wasn't anywhere near what it would have been, so I don't have to feel bad about using it.
I have a general idea about how to adjust these things (brass hammer, light taps) but it's a brand new ballgame for me. I've seen brass, wooden-headed hammers in a few places, and it's said that the wooden face is so that the planes aren't marred during use.
Do people really tap the planes, and not just the blade? If so, where? My guess would be the heel, if they do, but like I said, I'm way out of my league here, and I'd much rather not do anything too stupid if I can help it.
I know I've seen some of you in here with anderson and shepherd planes... do they come with some sort of instructional book? Or do you just wing it at first and hope you're not doing it wrong?
