OT:Canadian travel ??

>I'm planning to take a week to travel about with just SWMBO. Am pretty firm about going to Mackinac Island for a day or two. Thinking about crossing into Canada for a few days and that begs the question - should we travel west around the north side of Lake Superior or east and south around the east side of Lake Huron??

I have no clue what either holds. Looking at the map makes me think the Huron route could end up looking a bit like most of the midwest on the one hand. On the other hand, it's the only route that gets me near a Lee Valley store. What's a person to do? I look forward to your thoughts.

great French bakery in Terrace Bay. Got a personal lesson on making French Bread there.

Thunder Bay- restored Fort William. has cabinet shop with nice person that makes wood planes, and other tools and builds things with period tools, including a barn, does research on hide glue. I found it more enjoyable than Wiliamsburg , more accessable people. Canoe shop was just awesome. Other shops and activities.

Good eats at the Finnish Hall (can't remember its exact name, east side of town) especially Finn pan cakes in AM and ethnic dishes at other times. Small woodworking store downtown.

Lots of woods and occasional scenic views of the lake along the way. Pack your XM or Sirrus radio unless you want a large dose of Canadian Public Radio, 'cause that is all you will get. You will pass several outstanding canoe routes, if you are into such.

>My best friend lives up in Wawa, Ontario.....so I can tell you from experience that the trip from the Soo along the east and north shore of Lake Superior (via Route 17) is drop-dead gorgeous. There's not much in the way of civilization or touristy stuff tho....mostly scenery. If you have time to take some back roads, there's plenty of wildlife.

one warning: if you are driving at night, take the moose warnings very seriously.
