new box

>Just finished this little "watch caddy" for a friend of mine. He took me on a great golf vacation so the least I could do was give him a little trinket, or a box to hold his trinkets...

Don't post from preview

Dan Donaldson

>If you post from the preview, the picture gets lost. If you preview, hit the back button to get back to the original input before you hit post. This is an ongoing problem. It was prevalent in Firefox before, but seems to be affecting other browsers now that we are on a new server. What browser are you using? (just asking because if it is not Firefox, then we need to try to figure out what is going on.)

>Nice box. Could you tell some more about the inlay? How did you do it? Is it done with thin veneers or thicker pieces? I think inlays and carving are details that take a good piece and make it an excellent piece. Good job.

Re: new box

thanks and some stats

Matt- Los Angeles

>The box is about 11" w x 5" deep. About 5" tall.

The dovetails in the case front are half lapped and set in there is a web frame supporting the drawers. The pulls are notched into the top of the drawers...

All of the joinery was done by hand.

I didn't post this pic before out of sheer embarrassment for the holes left in the drawer sides. They didn't bother me in the overall look of the box when I made but the picture really made me cringe.

Thanks Wendell

Matt- Los Angeles

>I made the inlay by cutting the diamond piece in maple. I milled the piece to about 3/16" thick. I then attached the Rosewood band. I just lined up the sticks and marked the angle with a little chisel tap. Sawed to the line and glued the pieces on. This was my first attempt at a bordered inlay, easier than I thought. Once it was dry, I planed it flat on the bottom, stuck it to my box with double stick tape and scribed lines around it.

It was a little dicey because on two sides my scribe lines were quite faint. I had to tilt the box this way and that to see them. That was a big mistake because it made chopping to the lines pretty scary. I guess I just didn't press hard enough initially.

When it was all cleaned out I glued it in and planed it flush...The overall depth of the recess was 1/8". That's about it

Thanks for looking

Pesky wabbets

Jim Reed @ Tallahassee

>Sorry for the bad wordplay 8-)

I have the same problem with bottom rabbits on drawer fronts. What I do is cut a small niblet of wood and glue it in the hole after the drawer is finished. With a little chisel work and a little sanding, the wood matches and the unsightly rabbet end disappears. That is one pretty box and I am sure your friend will be pleased.

>That is one very nice keepsake box. Impressive work.

About those rabbets for the drawer bottoms...

You can conceal them on your next project by judicious placement of the drawer side tails. This has worked well for me. Perhaps in your drawer you could have had two tails, then the lower one could have hidden the rabbet.

Very nice looking box. I have to agree on the rabbits. Hiding them as Sandor explaned works very well. Again a fine job.

sandor, Jim and scott--

that is usually the approach I take...For some reason though, they looked kind of uniform and "cool" when I assembled it and I thought "well, I'll just leave em"...I won't do that again I don't think...Thanks for looking and your 6 cents....
