>apologies for this being off topic, but......

Maybe it's just me and my warped British sense of humour, but I would not like to be the guy in the "sightings" picture stood there with a big sign over my head saying "DICK".

Although I'm sure plenty have thought it of me ;-)

It works both ways

Ed Mulligan, Cape Cod

>Mist means 'fog' in English. In German it means 'manure pile'. So when the British car manufacturer Rolls Royce chose 'Silver Mist' for a new model name they had to have a different name for the german market.

Names... and connotations - OT

CONGER - Thie Irish diaspora in Munich

>Let me clarify that the word 'dick' in german simply means corpulent, plump, or rotund (which neither of the men photographed in the 'sightings' picture are). It carries no further meaning, either real or implied, in german.

The 'DICK' shop (owned by the Dick brothers, Heinrich and Rudolf) carries a large range of fine tools, and is a great 'drooling' place for aficionados (yada yada... satisfied customer).

One should not think too much 'into' names; they are not titles. I mean, really, what could one think into the name of the incumbent president of the USA.

Bill Lowrance in Geneva

>Mr. Dick should not have to speak up for his family's or company's name! It's a fine company (with which I have no relation), carrying a tempting variety of European, American, and Japanese tools, including luthiers' tools. As it happens, on Monday I faxed an order for a mini-caliper, a nagura stone, camellia oil, some small clamps, and a couple of pieces of briar wood. The package with impeccable documentation zipped through the Post and Swiss Customs and arrived in Geneva on Thursday morning... Check out the site, www.dick.biz.
