>wondering what the general consensus is on these old tool catolog reprints. Are they worth the money? they look to be alright, but thought I'd ask.

Dollar for Dollar what would you say was the best reference material (besides the Internet) for old tools? Buying orginal old tool catalogs from e-bay would be way to expensive I feel.

>Since I sell a lot of the astragal PRess stuff I may be a bit biased but I was a customer of them long before I was a dealer.

If you are serious about tools having real reference material is essentile. I consult many of the astragal books on a regular basis. The time savings to having my own library is amazing. Also books go out of print and a lot of my early Astragal stuff isn't avaiable anymore (like Britsh planemakers ) so getting a copy when the getting was good was a real plus that has beninffted me to this day. And of course the amount of money I have spent on books is pretty small to what I spend on tools.

Some of their books are essentil such as the dictioanry of tools and Guide to american wooden planes. Other books like the new sourcebook on rules - well I don't collect rules - but I may start and the reason is that I found the book so interesting.

>I can only speak to these - I bought the 5 pack (I think it was 5!) of old wooden plane maker's catalogs from them - Chapin Stevens, Sandusky, etc... - and I think they are quite useful and at a fair price for them. They show the profiles of many of their most common molding planes. For that reason alone - if you are going to make any planes yourself - they are handy to have. They are also handy in helping to identify old planes when looking for them in the wild.
