Closed the barn after the horse left

Jim Toews - Walla Walla, WA

>Well now, I've claimed for years that I prefer hand tools to power tools, only using electrons for bulk break down and roughing operations. The other day I was jointing the edges of a 180bf stack of walnut boards in preparation for starting a new project, so lots of electrons were being used. One particularily beautiful board (14" wide x 12' long and with the most wonderful curl, but I digress...) was giving me grief on my little 6" jointer; I even managed to drop the board and break my little toe. Long story short, I went back to it after icing my toe and remembered my #8 plane: it took less time to get that edge dead straight than it took to get out the ice bag. Sometimes I wonder if I'll ever learn that hand planes can be faster and better than power tools in many situations. Sigh...

Cheers All!

Jim

>Jim,

sounds to me like there is a powah joinah looking for a new home.

One of the students where I work knows that I like WW tools, and the other night he asked me if I'd be interested in an old power jointer. I told him NO and he about went into shock. Asked him why I'd want a finger eating machine, when I have a hand tool that will do the job better, quieter, quicker and safer. He just shook his head and called me "nuts".

Hope your little piggy heals up alright.

>Hi Jim;

My solution is to sell all my newer stationary tools, replacing them with vintage old machines in various states of disrepair- 3 phase motors without 3 phase power really helps. Then you have no chance of using the machines anyway...

>Didn't take him long to figure that out. We have known for years.
