>I want some small amounts of thick stock for non-turned projects. Bowl blanks would be perfect but are usually listed as "green by lumber standards" and sealed with wax, etc. Can anyone point me to info. on drying them without cracks in a home shop?

>The turning board and it`s archives would be a good place to get the info you`re looking for as would the AAW site or WOW.You`ll need an invite to access the WOW site but someone on the turning board can get you in,they`re good about that.

>There is a fairly recent discussion of nearly this topic in Country Workshop's "Green Woodworking" forum. The thread discussed putting the wood in a plastic bag so that it wouldn't dry too fast. This of course will invite mildew. Drew Lansner's answer was to take the wood out of the bag once a day, turning the bag inside out to let the accumulated moisture evaporate. This is supposed to control the rate of drying to a slow enough rate so that the wood won't check.

Given the rule of thumb that wood should air dry for a year for each inch of thickness, this amount of waiting and fussing may not be what you had in mind. One might speculate that the daily routine might be extended to longer periods as the amount of accumulated moisture on the inside of the bag decreased, perhaps eventually letting the wood out of the bag.
