Value of a Stanley 55?

Denis Chnard, Orlans, Ont.

>My boss has this plane that he inherited from his father. It is supposed to be in mint condition, with all the cutters, and came in a wooden box (unpainted). Apparently some of the cutters are still in "packing grease" (that was his expression), never used at all. Knowing him I'm sure he has the manual also.

A quick check on eBay gave me an indication, but none of those planes are complete from what I can see.

Any idea as to the plane's value?

Thnx,

DC

>According to my guide the plane in original box is worth 750 to 2000 dollars. The cutters are worth 5 to 10 dollars each. Special cutters are worth 10 to 40 dollars each. These are 2000 prices so I am sure they have went up in five years.

>I have seen a few in the original box in good shape with asking prices of $600. I think if you are actually intending to sell the plane and set an asking price, if it is in really good shape I would start the asking price at 7 or 8 hundred and be willing to negotiate.

>Recently I saw a 55 that a fellow on another forum listed on ebay that was in what I would consider to be MINT condition. Even had the original hang tag on the plane. Believe it sold for about $650 which I figured was right there. This plane was a rather new one [maybe 1950s?] an older one in simular condition would probably go higher. I figured that hang tag was worth over $50 of the price. 55s are often found in the box so that doesn't add to much to the price unless the box is minty too.Should have a label. 55's had lots of parts that can get lost over time and this affects the price downward. I don't think that the cutters were ever sold packed in grease so that makes you a bit suspect.Mint and complete means different things to a Tool guy and a non Tool Guy which your friend sort of sounds like. I have had people try to sell me mint 55s that were broken and missing half the parts. Few years ago on ebay a mint 55 would probably go for well over $1,000 but then people found out that they are not really a rare plane and prices came down. While i wouldn't do it to a mint one if I had a very good 55 to sell I would certainly break it up and sell it by the piece and expect it to realise the highest price like that.....Todd

>Spend the 6 bucks at LV and buy the booklet to make sure everythings there. I learned the hard way. From watching e-bay and buying a 55 and 45 unless you find out exactly what type it is a price is hard to come up with.
