Electrolysis: Newbie questions
Steve Kubien
>Evening everyone,
Months ago I picked up a cheap trickle charger with the thought to try electrolysis as a means of rust-removal. Recent talk has prompted me to take action (I hate when that happens!). I've got a couple of questions....
I'm using a lag bolt as the anode and the object to be zapped is a no-name iron from a no-name #4. Scaly rust in a couple of places and lesser rust overall.
After 30min in the tank, the iron came out pretty clean except, where the formerly rusted areas were a mostly black colour. Is this normal? Is it because I am using baking soda instead of washing soda (SWMBO who is chemist said it shouldn't make much difference, besides, I had it on hand)? Is the problem a lack of time in the tank and using a trickle charger? Will using more or less soda make a difference (even if I use washing soda)?
Anyway, I put the iron back in and I am using a 5x5 stainless steel butt hinge as an anode and I am leaving it overnight. I figure worst thing that can happen is that my hinge will be small enough for a jewellery box.
Thanks for your help.
