Plane on E-Bay?

Jerry Nicholson

>Item 6185161090 on E-Bay is listed as a "Vintage Stanley Handyman Wood Frame Plane" with the following comment:

"YOU ARE INVITED TO BID ON THIS BEAUTIFUL STANLEY HANDYMAN, WOOD FRAME #H1294-18 INCH PLANE. IF YOU ARE A VINTAGE TOOL COLLECTOR THIS IS A [MUST HAVE ITEM FOR YOUR COLLECTION]"

I hope no one is going to bid against me so that I can own this "beautiful Stanley ...etc etc

1) Somebody somehow mixed up their listing descriptions

or

2) Somebody is VERY stupid.

How you could possibly mix up a plane and a level otherwise I'll never know.

>No, no, Todd, you don't understand. A Plane can fly level. Old Planes were made of wood. A Level is made of wood, therefore it is a Plane.

Logic -101.

De plane, De Plane!

>I gave my daughter the test and she is the least tool oriented person I know. She immediately correctly identified it. So ya gotta wonder who is selling this stuff.

What is your first reaction when you see this kind of error? My first reaction is to think "I'm not going to buy from an idiot like that!" but really, who cares whether the seller knows what it is or what it's worth. If you (or I) know what it is and we want it, well, go ahead. Maybe since it is mis-listed, there won't be as much competition to get it. Is that wrong?

In this case, I can afford to pass, however. I don't nemo levels.

>I've been looking for one of these for years. between 1957 and 1964 STanley produced a line of planes (this line) that were designed to look like a level. The reason was that they were the perfect gift for someone who wasn't exactly sure what they wanted for Christmas. They had a certain popularity on building sites for carpenters who were tired of their co-workers borrowing their tools- sort of hide in plane site. You could keep a nice sharp transitional plane in your tool box and everythong would think it's a level and not borrow it - and everyone had a level. I think the reason they stopped making them is that in general in the 1960's hand plane usage on constuction sites because really unusual so the market vanished. Anyway I've a seen a bunch at auction go really high - this one isn't in great shape so maybe it's affordable.

>you know darn good and well that if you had pulled this boner that we'd RAG YOU TO NO END! ;~) I'd even be willing to bet that Bob would even turn the keys of the short bus over to you.

I fiqure the seller just got things a bit mixed up when posting them on da-bay. I've never done it, so I don't know if it's possible or not. My favorite is still the guy who tried to pass off a lever cap as a chisel. That was a screamer!
