Practice Saws

Skip in Falls Church

>Well, there is an up side to learning how to sharpen saws - a good reason to get more saws. :) I picked up a couple of cheap eBay saws, (less than $20 for the pair including shipping) a Disston-Keystone K5 8 point cross cut and a nice little Jackson 10", 14 tpi backsaw. After all, I need some saws to practice on instead of butchering one of my good ones.

The K5 needs a bit of work before I sharpen it - there are some dimples in the blade where someone hit it with something and a kink down around the teeth about a third of the way back from the toe of the saw. Unfortunately the handle is cracked - so I'll have to make a new handle. (Or was that fortunately?) I've redesigned the handle for a 3 finger grip and have a nice piece of curly ambrosia maple set aside to make a new handle.

The Jackson was in surprisingly good shape except it's missing a saw nut, the bolt's there - but no nut. Anyone know where I can get a period saw nut to replace it? Fortunately the handle was in really good shape and cleaned up nicely. (Or was that unfortunately?)

I also have an order on the way from Joel that will let me do the small Jackson. (More tools too - saw sharpening isn't too bad.) The down side is that I won't be able to do anything with them until next week. We're running to Boston for my stepdaughter's gradutation from Harvard for 3 days this week - of course I'm working the weekend.
