egg beater drills
Sanford Levy
>Hi, I have a few questions about egg beater hand drills and have not seen many posts. I have seen a lot for sale on ebay, but have not seen a live one since I was a kid-- which was some time ago. I was first wondering if they work very well or are likely to be discarded after a few tries by someone used to electric drills. Also, I wondered whether the usual bits for an electric drill will work well with them. Third, I wondered if anyone has recommendations about one or two to try out. The Millers Falls web site has a huge number and I have no idea what kind to try (and not a lot of cash to experiment with).
Finally, a bit of woodworking wisdom from a not quite beginning woodworker. Toss out the old saw (pardon the pun) "measure twice and cut once." Following that rule only doubles the time you spend before you screw up and have to start over. After all, if you measure incorrectly once, you are perfectly capable of measuring incorrectly twice or three times. Better to buy triple the amount of wood, eyeball it, and hack away. Then, when that wood is all used up, and reduced to fire wood, decide that you really didn't want to build that thing anyway. This approach saves time, frustration, and keeps you from filling your house with useless stuff like furniture. It also keeps expectations down so that you get amazing amounts of praise from friends and family once something actually gets built.
