>There are some people that could weld a cast iron lever cap but I think it is a rather tricky operation.Brazing is probably easier and most old planes that you see that have been repaired are brazed.Don't know what the damage is to the cap but you often see repairs done by riveting too and it can be done in a neat manner. Unless something special I have to question why go to the trouble to repair the lever cap instead of just getting a replacement that isn't damaged.....Todd

>For a M-F part, you may have to buy a whole 'nother planeto use for parts, but if you just want to have a user, you might try a Stanley part. Highland Hardware (and probably others) have a nearly complete stock of Stanley parts available in their catalog.

>Hi DC,

I'll keep an eye open for one at the Lachute flea market. 2nd largest flea market in Quebec. I havn't been lucky there though. I did find a Millers Falls #5c last summer, but they seem rare. No Bedrocks, either. If I find something, I'll mail it to you.

What # M-F do you have?

I ordered a lever-cap from a store in Montreal, for an old Stanley #7, and it took forever to come in, and cost me over $40. I'd just buy an old plane for parts if I were you.

>Hi Bob!

Thanks for the offer, much appreciated...

The plane is a Millers Falls 85.

I dug this thing out of Michelle's grandfather's old toolbox, if I can make it work, great, if it's too much trouble I'll keep it for sentimental reasons...

I've already restored two planes from that box, a corrugated sole Stanley No. 6 and a Millers Falls No. 4 bullnose plane.

You should come to the Ottawa Woodworkers Association meetings... Next one is this Wednesday...

>Hi DC.

I measured my Millers Falls lever-cap last night. I think it's too wide for your plane. It's 1 31/32" wide, and it appears you need one just under 1 1/2" wide. I'll check the flea market tomorrow, and if I see something, I'll pick it up. Parts are usually dirt cheap there.

I'd love to get up to Ottawa. It's been a while. Havn't been up that way since the show last fall. Going to be very busy here for the next 4 weeks, but maybe after that I'll go for my annual Lee Valley Pilgimage. ;-))

All the best, Bob

Make sure you give me a shout before heading over for your pilgrimage...

Thanks for checking for the cap,
