Butt Mortise Hinge Plane as Scrub Plane

>I bought the LN butt mortise plane with the extra "scrub" iron, but until today, never used it. It is only 7/8" wide, but it did a decent job of cleaning up this poplar settee seat blank. (I will need to hit it with the Millers Falls #18 before I start saddling it.)

>I've been wanting to post a question on this exact subject for quite a while...you must've read my mind! How does the BMP compare to a scrub plane in effectiveness? I've got the BMP and was considering purchasing the extra blade. Have you used the plane yet for hinge work? If not, you'll love it. Looks like you've got some nice throughs going in that poplar. Thanks

>This one does the job, but it's not as aggressive as my ECE scrub plane. The iron isn't as wide, or as thick. The BMP isn't a super rugged piece of hardware, either. But if you have occasional need to do heavy wood removal, the BMP with the scrub iron may be a viable alternative. I'm thinking I'll be using it for cleaning up rough sawn seat blanks from now on. The ECE is too much, and the jack takes too long.

With the straight blade this plane is great at routing out hinge mortises. If you're used to doing it with chisels, this little guy seems like magic. I've got two walnut table tops I'm going to inlay maple squares into to make chess boards- I plan on getting a lot of mileage on this plane when I get to this.
