Veritas MKII Infamous "also does" .......

Eric Hedberg

>OK I'm succumbing to peer pressure and thinking about getting one. No doubt about planes and chisels. But, not sure how it will work on spokeshaves. Does it need an adapter for the shorter or maybe even current production model blades? I don't see any pictures showing a spokeshave blade installed. Are things a bit wobbly with short and/or thin blades? No detail in the instructions either, but I'm not going to rant about plane bias:-) Anyone have any experience? Eric

>Hi Eric -

Three clamping ranges, so you can get the same angle different ways...

Ex1 - a 1 3/4" long blade clamps fully, projects 1 1/4", at 20 degree bevel on the "green" scale, at 30 deg on the "yellow" and 40 degree on the red..

Depending on your bevel angle...you can securely clamp blades as short as 1" (54 degrees, 40 degrees, and about 24-26 degrees).

Cheers -

>The only thing that I think the new MKII might NOT be as good at as the old Veritas two piece set of honing guide and angle jig is skew chisels and blades for skew planes like the 140. If you're careful you can maintain the geometry of a skew blade reasonably well in the old one. Anybody have any suggestions or comments on something I've missed.

Ah, now I see

I wonder if you could "trig" a

Eric Hedberg

>triangle out of MDF/plastic and use it to position the skew chisel to make it a "rectangular blade". Then you could use the setup for the correct angle etc. on the MKII to get your edge. Just a thought. Eric

>I have been testing the MKII, and my experiences pretty much parallel the results that others have seen. It works well on shorter spokeshave blades. I have yet to put a skew blade in my for testing, but Derek Cohen has "crossed that bridge" already and posted his findings on the Australian Woodwork Forums board. Here is a link to his observations on skew blades. Also note that Rob Lee has indicated that there will be a special skew blade carrier offered at a later time.
