Townsend furniture at the Met

Jeremy Osner

>I'm not sure if somebody posted about this already and I missed it; if so excuse me. I just was reading about a furniture show that is at the Metropolitan Museum in NYC through September, 50 pieces by John Townsend of Newport. Here is an article about Townsend (this link is supposed to be permanent but I cannot guarantee that it will be), here is a guide to the exhibition.

I will be going to see it one of these Friday evenings in the next month or so (the museum is open till 9 on Fridays); if any other NYC-area Neanderthals would like to make a field trip of it, let me know either as a reply to this message or by e-mail.

>No responses to this yet so I guess people are not interested or not in the area. But just in case anyone missed this I wanted to pull it back up to the top -- we will be going on the evening July first around 6 pm or so, if anyone else wants to meet us contact me. It looks from the catalog like a really amazing show, and some of the pieces will be displayed upside down with all the joinery exposed.

>Jeremy, I'm definitely going to go see the John Townsend exhibit. However, I have not decided when. It takes a bit more planning to get there from here, especially since I have to coordinate with LOML, who travels a lot on business, and with Joel, since I promised I would also spend some time in his Museum while I was in the City visiting the Met. I will probably find that a late evening trip won't work out for me, due to the time it will take to travel home again afterwards. Sorry. It would certainly be advantageous to go with someone who knew how to get around in Manhattan. I only know how to get around Manhattan. It would also be advantageous to go with someone who understands joinery, as LOML gets really really bored really quickly with that kind of stuff.

If I had my druthers, I'd go on Sunday, the 19th of June, when three lectures associated with the Townsend exhibit are being given, one by Alan Breed. That may not work out either, because I have prior committments on that weekend to a regatta with an old wooden boat I'm in the process of restoring to racing trim, and may not have enough energy left to turn around and go to NYC. Also, Joel's shop isn't open on Sundays.

>I have the keys. So my shop can be open anytime I want to open it up. I'd be happy to arrange a time on a Sunday if that's when you are around. Although I would seriously recommend trying to see the show during the week. My guess is that on weekends the show will be mobbed. it's getting tons of press and will certainly be the most popular furniture show in NYC in a long long time.

Remember also that the Met has one of the finest furniture collections in the country and in addtiotion to the townsend exhibit there is tons more stuff to see.

I am not sure when I will see the show. I know it will be during the week. I'm just going to take a day off sometime.

>It sounds like I need to plan more than one trip if I want to do Manhattan Island justice :^)

Friends who go to the city from here suggest driving up to Princeton, NJ and then taking the train in to NY.

>THere is also the old MErchant's house museum - C. 1850 furniture that was bought for the house and is still there - including a duncan phyfe dining set.

THe Brooklyn Museum.

for modern furniture the modern is better (MOMA)

and of course since one cannot eat furniture we have a reasonable selection of places to eat and you might want to take in a show too.

That makes good sense -- the NJTransit train will get you right into Penn Station in Manhattan and it is pretty easy to access any of the subways from there. I linked the train schedule below.

>William,I second that train idea. New york is a very wacky amusement ride by car as well as a nightmare to park in.In the city you can go almost anywhere by train and all the systems are linked.Plus, the trains run constantly, day or night.---Jack

>Here is a subway map, for when you get into The City.

P.S. I went to elementary school one block east of the museum.
