Millers Falls planes - Good? Valuable?

Denis Chnard, Orlans, Ont.

>Going through my wife's grandfather's old rusty tool chest, I started cleaning up (electrolysis and all) some tools in there. The tools were rusted enough that I couldn't make out the brand, until after cleaning I saw Millers Falls stamped on the iron of the bullnose plane.

A web search helped identify the tool as a Millers Falls No. 4 bullnose plane. It is definitely a user plane, as chunks of paint are missing.

There was another plane in the box that I couldn't make sense of. It looked like there were parts missing, and the most unusual thing is that the plane has two beds. Anyway, while browsing through the site where I found the info on the No. 4, I found out that what I had in front of my eyes is another Millers Falls plane, this one a No. 85 rabbetting/bullnose plane, and that in fact the plane is basically complete. Unfortunately the lever cap is broken (but I have the two broken parts), and rust is quite extensive. I'm running it through electrolysis, I'll see tonight how it comes out.

Are these planes useable, and are they worth anything?

Thnx,

DC

>In my experance most Millers Falls with a few exceptions ,[plastic handle 209 planes come to mind as do the buck rodgers line]] are worth less then simular Stanleys. The no.4 is a common clone of the stanley 75 and maybe worth $15 or so. The 85 if in good condition with the fence and depth stop [and a blade cap] is probably a $25-$35 plane.Broken parts quickly turns it into a parts plane and truthfuly is probably worth more as such! By the way these 85 planes have a different thread then a Stanley 78 or sargent 79 so their fence rod or depth stop screw will not fit.I know lots of people like Millers Falls planes and I imagine they work fine but personaly I don't think most you see are as well made as a Stanley or Sargent....Todd

>I don't think they are worth much for resale but my favorite jack plane is a Millers Falls #14B. The blade is excellent steel and it's a lot of fun to use.
