1840's Disston medallion
Moses Yoder in White Pigeon, MI
>According to the Disstonian institute, Disston was only making about a hundred saws per year during the 1840's. So finding an 1840's saw at a garage sale for $2, and (realizing the saw was an early one but not how early) I talked the guy into giving me 2 saws for $3, so technically the saw cost me $1.50. The medallion has the full name Henry Disston over the eagle with the head turned upward to the left, and PHILA underneath the eagle, which according to the Disstonian site was started in 1845. The saw is in bad shape; the handle is wired together, missing one split nut, badly pitted blade, but the medallion is actually in good shape and the nib is still on the saw :) So in my opinion, this is a Hughes-worthy gloat; an 1840's Disston saw for $1.50. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it. And my wife called just to make sure I knew there was a guy down the road with some saws that looked old to make sure I'd go down and see. So it's her fault. In fact, I didn't just get on-line to look at medallions and then gloat about my find, I'm just gloating about how much Megan cares about me ;)
