>Got a promo e-mail from Garrett Wade today and one of the items they have is a repro of the old Stanley No. 1 Odd Job. They even have a 12" rule as an accessory. It looks so damn spiffy I'm tempted to get one.

Would it just gather dust in a drawer or would I be likely to actually USE it? If you have one, what do you use it for?

Seems to me that there was a conversation concerning these a year or so ago, and the general consenus was that they where poorly made and not worth the money, time, or trouble.

>Bob,

I was given one for a birthday present. I wouldn't buy one for myself, but it's pretty neat to have around and I use it more often than one might think.

First, though, the rulers are nice and straight (I have both) and the casting is nicely machined square and true, but do NOT use it as a try square with a ruler. The ruler is held in place by a single set screw, and because the fit between the ruler and casting isn't the greatest, the set screw skews the ruler a degree or two or three from 90.

I find myself using it as a square in tight corners (sans ruler of course), a rough and ready level, a marking gauge, and much else I can't remember right now. It seems like it always finds its way into my apron and then into my hands. I have no use for some features: for example it can be used as a compass. But you may find these other uses invaluable.

I am constantly battling the set screws. They loosen themsleves far too readily, which causes the ruler, or the scribe thingy to fall out. I've been meaning to put a drop of Loctite on the threads, but I haven't. Perhaps I just like cursing.
