Old tool for woodworking???

Walter McClain

>Went to 2 yard sales this morning looking for an old brace.(No Luck). One man said he had an old woodworking tool he had not sold. I asked him what it did and he said it was a wood scraper his dad had used. I bought it for $3.00. It has E.C Atkins and Co on the tool and E.C. Atkins , Silver Steel on the blade. I am new at Woodworking so tell me how this works and what its called. I am sure itas not called a wood scraper. If no link to a picture shows up I still haven't figured out how to do it. :{

No Picture

>Not sure what it is. It looks like you did it right, but the picture as uploaded is only 922 bytes. It would appear that something happened to it during the upload process and most of it got lost, or the picture has a problem somehow.

>Yep, it's a scraper. If you are new to woodworking, the scraper will be a mystery. If you learn well by reading, there are a number of articles on line about how to sharpen a scraper; you might start by doing a search of the archives of this site. A nicely sharpened scraper is really an awesome tool. You'll have an ugly old brace winging it's way somewhere towards Ohio probably starting on Tuesday. Although if you stop at ten or more garage sales you'll have a reasonably good chance of finding one before then. We have a new flea market opening about a mile from our house at 8 am tomorrow morning, supposedly about a hundred vendors, probably all imported junk but I'll have to ride my bike down and see. woohoo.
