Want a Clifton 410.....

Mike Caldwell

>Where is the best place to buy a Clifton 410? I got to use one for a week at a chair workshop last week, and love it.

Thanks for the help,

Mike

>Highland Hardware has them, but they aren't cheap. (No association, just someone who spends too much money there (i.e. a new Hock #3 plane blade and chipbreake))

However, before you make up your mind, you might want to consider the Lee Valley/Veritas medium shoulder plane, IMHO, a lot more plane for a lot less money, even if it's mother dresses it funny.

LOL!

>I have a 410, like it a lot. Small size is nice, pretty handy I think. Got it at Highland Hardware ten years ago or so.

I like the LV planes, but they didn't consult me about the style! I think they are an aquired taste, but the price point is decent, and they appear to be highly functional.

I may ask for a medium LN shoulder plane for Christmas or my birthday to fill out between my big Record and small Clifton. I would really mostly like to make my own infill, but don't have the time.

I've tried to use the LV....

>it's just too heavy for my likes. The 410 has a nice, manageable feel for me. I have always prefered smaller tools.

By the way, I by everything I can from Lee Valley regardless of price.

Thanks for the responses,

Mike

LN 420 and Large Shoulder Planes

Todd Stock

>Other option for non-Buck Rogers styling is the LN 420 (medium shoulder; $175) - nearly identical to the Record 420, but with the usual improvements. The new LN medium shoulder is about the same size as the LV medium shoulder, but without the set screws and tilting knob that result in that love/hate response by some of us (love the human factors/hate the look).

If this is your first shoulder plane, you might consider a large shoulder plane purchase for about what the Clifton will run ($175-$225). Much more useful general purpose tool - wide enough to trim tenon cheeks as well as shoulders, and nice for cleaning up the 3/4" and wider rabbets that are common on larger projects.
