Record Chisel Question

Kerry in FortSask

>Hi again,

I mostly lurk around here but ask a question once in a while. I recently picked up a used set of carving chisels. The box is clearly an original chisel box from Record, however there are no markings whatsoever on the chisels. Did Record produce chisels with no markings? The box does seem sized right for this set of chisels. The chisels themselves are in good shape other than some rust which I'll remove. I got them to use, not to collect but still I'd like to know if they are indeed Record brand. They can't be terribly old - the box has some particle type board in it. Anyway, if anyone happens to know if Record marked all of their chisels, I'd appreciate knowing, thanks.

>Particle board history can surprise you. There have been laminated boards (plywood) for over 60 years (can we say the Spruce Goose?). Thin particle board (hard board) has been around for over 70 or so. Thicker particle board has been around for over 50.

>Saw a 'plywood guy' on Tools & Techniques who said manufactured plywood's been around since 1906 - almost a hundred years! I think it did not come into wide use till WWII though ...

>Cool, I knew plywood has been around a long time, but I had thought particle board was relatively new. Ok, so maybe these chisels are older than I thought, I dunno. Still would like to figure out if they are actualy Record or not.
