WWJ duns for Book

Mike G.

>Well I knew it was only a matter of time before WWJ would start dunning people for the unsolicited book they sent out. Yep, I got my letter in the mail today asking for payment or send the book back. I wrote them a note on the letter they sent me telling them how I felt and also that I wouldn't be renewing my subscription either.

If y'all recall, the letter that accompanied the book stated in no uncertain terms that since it [b]unsolicited[b/] material, the addressee was in no way liable for the book. They could keep it, give it away, or burn it if that was their desire. I chose to give my copy to the goodwill.

It really chaps my buut when someone "gives" you something, then waits a few months and duns you for payment. I reckon they assume you've forgotten about it and will send payment forthwith.

Consumer fraud?

Bill Houghton, Sebastopol, CA

>I didn't think that kind of behavior was legal. You might consider contacting your Consumer Affairs agency to see if they think a formal complaint is worthwhile.

>Most state Attorney General Offices have a division of Consumer Protection. When they get involved, fraudulent practices usually stop pretty quickly.

Postal Inspector!

Ernie Miller

>Contact you local postal inspector. They can stop it real quick including halting all mailings for them including there next eddition of the magazine if they don't cease and dissist. That would put them in a world of hurt especialy if the company has more than one magazine.

>This is what is referred to as "negative marketing". It may be legal in your state and is therefore perfectly acceptable as far as the solicting company is concerned. You can bet that the company doing this probabley checked out the legality of this type of marketing/sale practice before initiating their mailout campaign. It's unfortunate this type of practice continues. Should be outlawed off the face of the planet.

What happens if you don't pay?

mike recchione

>Or send them a note saying "What book - I didn't order (or get) any book..."

Getting sufficiently stiffed for doing this once or twice would probably cure them of the habit. Especially since they can't even prove you got anything, and you didn't order it from them in the first place, so...

>I sent a note with the invoice telling them how I felt and that I wouldn't be renewing my subscription to their magazine...of which I've gotten at least one letter a week for the last month or so telling me I need to reup my subscription. I've got a place for letters like that...it's called the "round file."
