>Hi Steve

Perhaps you could say what Clay did!

I will post my system for reducing pictures, since it is so easy. This 40kb limit is extremely limiting, and it has been a real test for me to post some pictures. The LV Honing Guide pics originally started at about 2 Mb, so reduced to 40 kb will cause it to be degraded no matter what. On the other hand the picture below began at 900 kb, and was reduced to 37 kb. You can see the result for yourself.

My system is this:

(1) Insert the picture into a Word document and save it as a html file.

(2) Enter the folder through Windows Explorer and you will discover that two picture files have been created, one at the original size, the other considerably reduced (to about 15 kb).

(3) You can manipulate the size of the smaller file (up or down) by increasing/reducing the inserted picture in the Word document, and then saving it.

(4) Stop this process when you get to around the 40 kb range, then remain it as you wish.

(5) Upload to WC.

>You are absolutely correct Derek. For those who missed Clay C's "We wanna see" post from a copuple of days ago, here were his instructions for getting pics in your posts. For the technologically challenged amoung us, it's nice and simple...

Clay wrote, "There is one cheap-and-dirty way to resize pics without using any photo editing software at all (if you use Windows XP).

1 - Open Windows Explorer to the folder containing the image.

2 - Single-click the image (highlight it). In the menus on the left side of the window will be a choice - 'Email this picture.'

3 - Choose that, and then check the button that says 'Make my pictures smaller.'

4 - Email it to yourself, and just save that new email attachment. I've found these always come in under 40KB, and often with very good quality."

Nicely done Clay. I certainly couldn't have said it better myself (well, I could but it would hold no relationship to factual advice).

Cheers,

Aw shucks ...

>T'wadn' nuthin' ...

But, I'm glad it helped, Steve - Derek, this might be a smidge simpler than pulling the image out of the Word doc (besides, I know if it were me, I'd never get around to deleting all the subsidiary files being created in Word, and I'm compulsive about cleaning up) (except in my house, of course)(or the shop).

What I haven't been able to understand is why this method generates (for me, anyway) images that seem to 'have it all' - they are higher-quality, larger pixel-wise, AND smaller-file-size than I can make on my own, when I use 'real' software like Irfanview or Picasa ...

Anyway, I'm VERY happy to be able to help, and I hope this means a steady stream of photos to come, from Steve and anyone else who's struggled!

>I would be happy to serve up some photos. Let's see...First, I need a digital camera but that means I need to find a job. Hmmm. I'm working on that. Next, I need to complete a project (at least past the 'idea' stage). Oops. Probably easier to find a job!

Precise resizing?

Derek Cohen (in Perth, Australia)

>Clay

With your method is it possible to re-size the picture precisely? Using Word I can increase/decrease the picture to within a few kb of the size I want.

Yes, and no ...

Clay C in Miami

>Yes, it's possible (by adjusting the 'defaults' it imposes when you hit that little 'make'em smaller' button) But, it ain't easy to explain ... It makes 'em a decent size and seemingly better quality than I can make, at quite small file sizes, which is all dialup cares about.

I am sure that whatever automatic background Microsoft software it is doing that magic is doing it about the same way for both Word and Explorer. These often come up around 15-20kb too, so whatever works ... .

I was just shooting for a way with few steps.
