Weekend project

Richard R

>Hello All,

I had some spare time this weekend, and I had a choice: finish my bathroom remodel, or make a plane. Not being one to always have my priorities in order, the bathroom remains unfinished.

This is my second attempt after reading Finck's book. Better than the first one, at least. Bed angle is 55. She works ok (curlies hover around .001-.002), but the best part is that it didn't cost me anything but time, as I used maple and mahogany scrap and the iron from my first attempt. The worst part is the mouth is already starting to chip and I'll have to let in a piece of ebony or the like to fix it. Guess that's one of the reasons you don't see many smoothers made from maple...oh well, it was a lot of fun anyway.

One heck of a learning experience as well.

Very nice...I like how you have shaped the rear of the plane for your hands.

Where did you get the blade for it?

Dan.

>Thanks for the comments guys. Luke and Dan: I bought the iron (1 3/4") from David Finck via his website. It's very nice, but for my next plane I'm going to use one of Ron Hock's, so I can compare the two. Talk about what a slippery slope rust hunting is...this just might be worse. The first one was ok, and it works, but it's finicky and uglier'n sin. After this one, though, I want to keep going...maybe tackle some hollows and rounds and molding planes. I just might never get the bathroom finished ;)
