Benchtop Flattening

>Hi All,
I would greatly appreciate some help from all of you out there.
About a month ago I ran across a link to an article on benctop flattening. This article presented an ingenious method for flattening a benchtop that used two strings atatched at the corners of the bench to determine where the bench was in need of correction. The great thing about this technique was that it allowed you to work accurately without a long straightedge.
Anyway, at that time I had no plan on building a bench any time soon so I didn't hang onto the information.
Long story short, I'm planning a bench and I cannot find that information anywhere. I've looked in all the major forum archives and all over the internet but cannot find it anywhere. I know that Highland Hardware has an article on their sight that demonstrates Tage Frids router carriage method but that article doesn't actually describe the use of the strings to pinpoint the areas to flatten and I will be using handplanes, not a carriage system.
Any help locating this information or other techniques would be greatly appreciated. All I have is a 3 foot straightedge and the bench will be 8' by 32".
Thankyou,
Tom Wolf
