My New Website *LINK*

>Here it is...finally. Thanks to my wife Tery for doing the whole thing and Jason Tuinstra for cropping some of the pictures for me. It's still far from complete as many text need to be revised as well as some pictures.

Nevertheless, it's kinda here and I'd like to hear what you think.

Thanks.

Now I can say " ... I knew Chico when he was just a baby woodworker, and look where he is now."

The student has definitely surpassed the teacher (me, in at least a small way).

Good job - I'm proud of you .... rj

>Hello Chico,

Very nice furniture!

I am seeing a lot of stair-casing on the diagonals of the photos. I looked at the image specs, and it does not seem as if the photos are overly compressed - perhaps it is the method your helpers used to re-size/crop the photos? Maybe one of the bit-heads around here can offer an explanation.

Re: HTML

The data for the thumbnail photographs should be sub sampled - they're currently scalled in the browser. That's what giving slow first page loading.

The text should be applied in the HTML (not onto the main image).

In this page

http://www.sakmanfinewoodworks.com/crafts4.jpg

the entire page has been composited as an image.

Content looks good though. Feel free to ignore my HTML advice if you wish.

Picture staircasing

Dan Donaldson

>I looked at the pictures that have a lot of staircasing artifacts and see what the problem is. The pictures are being resized in the html. For instance, the real picture on the server might be 500X400 or something, but when displayed, it was resized to 150X something. When you do this, you get the bad artifacts that you see in some of your pictures. If you need a smaller picture, you need to make one in your photo editing software and use that. I use picture sizes in the code that I use, but it is the actual size of the picture and is used only to get the page to load faster. The bottom line is don't resize pictures in the html if you want good quality.

>Don't feel ignorant - I just know the name of the problem, not what to do about it! I am ten years out of date with HTML, etc.

It is a term used to indicate that a diagonal line on a video display (tv, computer, etc.) has a pronounced zig-zag look to it, instead of appearing smooth. It is often associated with low resolution/file-size. Your photos should have enough so that the edges should seem smooth.

(I see that the folks down-thread have the answer)

The squares thing is pixellation, btw.
