Gallery Show tomorrow...Sneak Preview

Thomas Skaggs, Foothills of Mount Level

>Good Morning Friends,

Well it is the eve of my first gallery show. Everything has been delivered and dusted off. The gallery owner is busy spotlighting things etc. Tomorrow night is opening night and there is a planned reception. I must admit that I am nervous! Im not nervous about whether anything sells, Im nervous about talking to non-woodworkers about my work. Oh well, I guess Ill suck it up and give it the old college try.

I thought Id post a few of the pieces that will be in the show. I have 12 pieces all together in the show. They represent work I have done over the past 12 weeks. All are original design.

This I posted a while back. Its a cabinet on stand. Mostly walnut with curly maple doors, wenge inlay and iron hardware. The case is constructed with sliding dovetail joinery and it has adjustable shelves inside.

This I call a Prairie Box. It is inspired by Prairie School Architecture. The box is cherry with birds eye maple inlay and some ebony string inlay. It is 28 long.

This is an art pedestal/stand. It is made of cherry with quilted maple panels. Inset into the top is slate. On top of the pedestal is a huge apple. I turned that on the lathe, then hand carved it and painted it with acrylics.

I will follow this post with a couple more pieces from the show. Fingers crossedthanks for checking the sneak preview

Tommy

>Here are some more pieces that will be in the show tomorrow:

This is a hanging wall cabinet. It is made of curly cherry. The carved panel is made of cherry with turned Tazmanian Rose Myrtle burl. This is literally my first attempt at hand carving, but I enjoyed it! The doors open inwardly and there are adjustable shelves inside. The pulls are black iron.

This is a console table. It is a walnut base and legs with a curly maple top. The inset medallions on the aprons are birds eye maple and the medallions on the top are cherry burl.

This is a wall clock. It is a segmented turning made with cherry and curly maple. Inlaid are strips of poplar and inlays of walnut. Its about 14 in diameter.

Well folks, thats the sneak preview. Ill post a follow up and let you all know how it went. It seems like it was not long ago I was a rookie asking a lot of dumb questions at Badger Pond. Now I am an Ellis Islander about to have his first gallery show. Maybe Wood Central has been a good influence? ;-)

Wish me luck!

>Thomas, you won't need an luck because you've been blessed with talent. You may need patience, however, to deal tactfully with the many clients who will want you to make them something and have it done 'yesterday'. ;>) Ellis Island, eh?? Good for you.

Thanks Tommy!

>Now I`m going to have to get another new keypad.

WOW!!

If this is your FIRST show then you`ve either been rubbing the wrong elbows or carefully hiding your talents, all the pieces were just top notch work and very creative.

Better dust off all the tools now as you`re sure to be too busy once the public gets to see what you can do.

Excellent Thomas!

>Those pieces are great. I think you'll do just fine talking to the people there. I just hope the gallery doesn't take too much of your hard earned profits.

>Good luck! That is interesting work, with some very nice wood and inlays.

Question: On the box, how is the bottom board attached to the rail between the legs?
